What is ecotherapy?
Ecotherapy is a holistic approach to wellbeing, recognising the inherent human connection to the natural world and its positive impact on mental and emotional health. It integrates nature into the healing process, acknowledging that our mental and physical health is deeply connected to our environment. Ecotherapy is grounded in the idea that humans have an innate bond with nature.
Key principles include emphasising the human-nature connection, promoting holistic well-being, and fostering a mutual relationship with the environment.
What is psychospiritual therapy?
It offers an expanded view of life with an emphasis on wholeness; dealing with the whole person; assisting the client in inner balance and integrating all the dimensions of the Self. It is experiential, focusing on your individual experiences and reality. As each client is seen as an individual, the sessions are non-prescriptive and are tailored individually.
Is spirituality the same as religion?
Spirituality is not the same as religiosity. When utilising spirituality in therapy, we take into consideration your personal belief system and help you derive a concept of spirituality that is a unique fit. Spirituality, then, is interaction and relationship to Spirit, as defined by you. Your religious views (or lack thereof) may or may not be related to your spiritual beliefs, and/or practice.
What options do you offer for outdoor therapy?
I work from various locations with different levels of accessibility and amenities, for example, in a park or piece of woodland with nearby parking or a more rural and wild setting.
What do I need to bring when doing outdoor therapy?
Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather and terrain. Bring some water and maybe a hot drink if it is chilly. I will provide mats to sit on.
What happens if the weather is too challenging?
We always check the weather the day before to see if the session should continue outside. If the weather is too bad, we agree to postpone or move the session online.
Is there any evidence of the benefits of nature-led counselling?
Yes. A huge number of studies show that time spent in nature can trigger positive changes in the brain, reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. When we immerse ourselves in natural environments, it has the following impact on our brains and nervous systems:
1. Stress reduction: nature has been shown to lower cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress. This can lead to an overall reduction in anxiety and stress-related symptoms.
2. Mood enhancement: Being in green spaces can boost serotonin production, improve mood, and reduce feelings of depression. The natural beauty around us can increase our sense of well-being, bringing a sense of calm and relaxation.
3. Increased focus: Time in nature helps boost our brain’s cognitive function, which can improve focus and reduce mental fatigue.
